Georg Philipp Telemann~~~~606~1659~~
Blurb~Possibly the most prolific composer ever, Georg Philipp Telemann was also one of the longest living. Born in 1681, he had a succession of major appoiments before taking up the position of musical director in the five main Hamburg churches in 1721. As well as composing, Telemann was an active promoter of his own music until his death in 1767~~~606~483~~

Concerto a la Francese~This four movement piece for two oboes, bassoon, strings and continuo shows Telemann at his most Francophile - the opening movement is a thinly disguised Rondeau, while the two faster movements feature the wind trio much in the same way as Lully opera overtures often do. The central Tendrement would happily fit into a French opera scene.

Concerto in B flat~Telemann added extra colour to this concerto for oboe and violin by adding two flute parts and replacing the second violin by another viola. The soloists really only exhibit their virtuosity in the final movement. The third movement is a 6/8 Dolce in which the oboe holds centre stage.

Concerto in D~This is a particularly lavish piece in the style of Vivaldi's concerto con molti stromenti, and was most likely composed by Telemann for the court orchestra in Dresden. It is scored for three horns in D (of which the top two are especially virtuosic), two oboes (although these are lacking in the Darmstadt source), solo violin and 4-part strings with a single violin and two viola lines. It has three movements, the central one for strings only.

Ouverture in F~Possibly intended for outdoor performance (it is scored for pairs of horns and oboes with bassoon), this suite consists of five movements: the Ouverture is followed by a Passepied, a Sarabande, a Rigaudon and Le Plaisir. It is sometimes referred to as La Chasse, but the title is mostly likely not original!

Concerto in D minor~This is one of over 100 concertos by Telemann that survive in the Hessische Landes- und Hochschulbibliothek in Darmstadt. It is scored for two oboes and bassoon with strings - the stately (and dramatic) Grave is followed by a lively Allegro in which the four upper parts are often in canon. Following a affective Affettuoso comes a second Allegro in which the violins play in unison.

Concerto in G~This violin concerto can be played as a chamber quartet - the soloist can be accompanied by two violins or violas (or violette, if you know what that means!) and continuo. There are four movements: an elegant Andante, a binary Allegro, a Siciliana in G minor, and a final Presto in 6/8 time.

Concerto in B minor~This fine flute concerto by Telemann consists of three movements: a Presto da capo, a beautiful largo and a quick final movement. Only the first movement makes virtuosic demands on the flautist. The middle movement features some unusual examples of cadence evasion.

Concerto in C minor~The opening of this piece must be among the most striking movements Telemann wrote - the first chord will shock most first-time players... There are three other movements, the fast ones with a strong Polish bagpipe flavour and an elegant triple time Largo. Every oboist should have it in their repertoire.

Ouverture in B flat "La Bourse"~Our edition of La Bourse is based on the parts in the Dresden State Library, which also include material for flutes (simply doubling the oboes!) It has long been a popular piece - not only on account of the strange names of the individual movements (the overall title meaning "The Stock Exchange", supposedly because Telemann lived above that establishment while working in Frankfurt).

Concerto in E flat~Although this is perhaps not the most likely key for a baroque oboe concerto, Telemann exploits the darker timbre of the instrument with typical ease. He manages to reach D minor in both the quicker outer movements, and he weaves some sinuey melodic lines in the central Largo.

Siehe, das ist Gottes Lamm TVWV 1:1316~Telemann wrote this cantata for Estomihi Sunday in 1717. It is scored for SATB, oboes, strings and continuo - the problem with the oboes is that there are two different versions and none really relates to the surviving score. For our edition, we print the score without the oboe parts, but provide separate prints of both sets so that you can decide for yourself whether you want to use either! Soprano and Bass have arias, while Alto and Tenor have Arioso-Recitatives. Dich rühmen die Welten TVWV 1:329~This 1762 cantata sets a text by the Hamburg student, Johann Josef Eschenburg, who was one of one youngster of his day to supply the elderly composer with libretti - Telemann seems to have enjoyed the company (and stimulation) of youth. For someone in his 80s, Telemann shows a remarkably fruitful imagination. The piece is scored for SATB, three trumpets and drums, strings (perhaps with doubling oboes?), and continuo (including at least one cello and one bassoon, which have a shared obbligato part in one of the arias). Siehe, das ist Gottes Lamm TVWV 1:1317~This second cantata called Siehe, das ist Gottes Lamm dates from 1725 and sets a text by Johann Friedrich Helbig (1680-1722). It too is scored for SATB, (2 oboes), strings and continuo, but is quite unusual in having no recitatives - instead, the opening aria is followed by a chorale, before three more arias lead to a second chorale.
