Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel~~~~602~1657~~
Blurb~Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel (1690-1749) was court composer at Gotha from 1719 until his death. Renowned during his lifetime as an opera composer, most of Stölzel's surviving oeuvre was written for the court church.~~~602~1605~~
Drei sind, die da zeugen~This cantata for Trinity Sunday opens with a fine chorus. The following sequence of recitatives and arias (and another Soprano / Alto duet) is typical of the tuneful Stölzel - this is lovely music! Ehre sei Gott in der Höhe~A cantata for Christmas night that works equally with choir and solo voices. The instruments include oboe d'amore, although the part almost fits the standard oboe and an alternative part is included in the set, and a modest part for solo violin in one aria. The arias are for Soprano and Tenor.~~Six scores and parts|STO001.2|Score|STO001.1|Extra Violin 1 part|STO001.6|Extra Violin 2 part|STO001.7|Extra Viola part|STO001.8|Extra Bass part|STO001.9|~602~313~Stoelzel, soprano, tenor, oboe d%27amore, violin~

Herr, tue meine Lippen auf~This cantata was written for the Feast of St John the Baptist ((24th June) and is scored for SATB, two trumpets, strings and continuo. The five movements are: Chorus, Duet (Soprano and Tenor), Recitative and Aria (Bass with instruments) and Chorale.

Kundlich gross~This charming Christmas cantata features a solo oboe and obbligato organ. The five movements are quite short (a typical feature of Stölzel's music), but each has am attractive feature - the soprano aria with two obbligato instruments is delightful, and the striking alto aria with just upper strings no less so.

Liebster Jesu, deine Liebe~This is the only known cantata by Stölzel for solo voice with instruments (violin, viola and continuo). Its tuneful arias are typical of his style and make this a particularly attractive work for Alto and strings.

Sind wir denn Kinder~This cantata was performed in the court chapel at Gotha during the Christmas festivities of 1720, and sets a text that J. S. Bach adapted for Leipzig some years later. With arias for Soprano and Bass, it complements another cantata (in preparation) for the same day in which the soloists are the Tenor and the Alto.

Mass in A minor~This Missa brevis (Kyrie and Gloria only) is scored for SATB (possibly just soloists originally, but the piece will work well with a small choir), two oboes d'amore, strings (including viola da gamba for one aria section) and continuo.

Stölzel writes beautifully tuneful arias and skilfully crafted contrapuntal choruses, and this short mass (lasting around 12 minutes) is typical of his church music.

The performing set includes two full scores, four vocal scores and all the necessary instrumental parts.

Mass in E flat~This Missa brevis also features unusual solo instruments, in this case a trumpet in E flat (which means it would be an ideal partner piece for Bach's "Christmas" Magnificat!) and obbligato organ. As usual, the piece is a tapestry of solos and choruses, with strong harmonic passages and exciting (but never too complex!) fugues.

The performing set includes two full scores, four vocal scores and all the necessary instrumental parts.

Blurb~While his church music becomes more popular (mainly thanks to the wonderful recordings made by Ludger Rémy for cpo), Stölzel's instrumental output remains little-known - it's time that changed!~~~602~2981~~
