Praetorius: Music for Christmas~Apollo's Fire's latest CD is an excellent new recording of music for Christmas Vespers by Michael Praetorius - one of the most important figures in the world if Historically Informed Performance, since (besides publishing an enormous amount of high quality church music) he wrote some of the most authorative texts on instruments, notation and music in general at the beginning of the 17th century.

For her programme, Jeannette Sorrel has chosen a balanced programme of intimate settings, familiar melodies and some of Praetorius's most inventive (and, frankly, rather funky!) largescale works, involving singers, strings, brass and continuo - there is some especially delightful violin and cornetto playing.
