String Quartet in C~Now little known, John More Smieton (1857-1904) was a fine amateur composer, and enjoyed a considerable reputation during his own life time. The quartet (which may have been written while he was studying in Edinburgh in the 1870s) has four movements, each of them quite different in style: the opening is full of energy, the following Romanza opens with a Scottish melody on viola, the minuet and trio are classically cast, and the finale combines elements of hunting calls, chromatic fugue and humour...
