Rupert Ignaz Mayr~~~~2049~2052~~
Sancta Maria~Rupert Ignaz Mayr is not perhaps a well-known composer, but he wrote some very fine music. Primarily a virtuoso violinist, he published several collections of church music. The present Marian piece comes from his 1681 Sacri Concentus which contains pieces for solo voice with various instrumental combinations. The accompaniment here is for four members of the da braccio family.

In terras descendam~This pastoral motet for soprano, two recorders (the originals are in soprano and tenor clef and the parts fit on descant and tenor - although the latter uses the full range of the instrument) and continuo comes from Mayr's Sacri Concentus and is in several sections - after an opening recitative for soprano and continuo comes a triple time aria, calling the shepherds to pay hommage to the Baby Jesus. Another section for voice and continuo only is followed by a movement in which long held notes suggest bagpipes.

Domine ad adjuvandum~There are relatively few concertato settings of the opening section of the Vespers service. Mayr's Psalmodia brevis ad Vesperas totius anni was published in 1706, and so is almost contemporaneous with Biber's Vespers set, and in fact we include it in our Biber services, since he did not set the text himself.
