Josquin des Prez~~~~1586~1640~~
Veni sancte Spiritus~This richly scored piece (the original part books suggest SAATTB but the ranges are closer to ATTTBB) is truly worthy of Josquin at his best. The first section is entirely in triple time, although the "beat" shifts from point to point, and the clever counterpoint means that there often is no sense of a tactus. The second section begins and ends in duple time, but has another triple time section at its heart. The fact that the attribution in the 1537 print is now doubted does not detract from the majesty of the piece at all.

Planxit autem David~William Kempster, the editor of this wonderful motet by Josquin, characterises it as being a work of "amazing human insight". Transposed up a tone to accommodate an SATB ensemble, this is a setting of verses from the Second Book of Samuel, and is basically a lament over the death of Saul and Jonathan.
