Ave maris stella
This setting by the Habsburg emperor Leopold I of the Vespers hymn, Ave maris stella is scored for SATB solo and tutti with viole (either da gamba or violin family), with doubling wind (cornetto and three trombones). The original material also includes a second continuo part labelled "Tiorba" and a conductor's score. The piece may be performed by soloists throughout (each voice gets one solo verse with the viols), but there are ripieno voice parts as well as the doubling brass.
