Joseph Martin Kraus
KRA001 Requiem, VB1
Edited by Brian Clark.
According to the manuscript copy now in the University of Uppslaa Library, Joseph Martin Kraus's setting of the
Requiem
was written in Vienna. It is scored for SATB, two horns, strings and continuo, and is a sequence of arias and choruses, mostly pious, reflective and humble, though with occasional moments of great energy and fire. There are solo movements for Soprano and Alto (including the Benedictus, which is a duet for both).

This two movement work was written at the request of Swedish King Gustav III to celebrate Riksdag 1789, when it was performed along with music by Kraus's near twin, Mozart. It is scored for flutes, oboes, bassoons, four horns, trumpets, timpani and strings.

KRA003 Sinfonia in C minor, VB142
Edited by Hans-Heinrich Kriegel.
This is arguably Kraus's most celebrated work - possibly originally written in C sharp minor (an extraordinary key for the period), legend has it that Haydn (a known admirer of Kraus's work) encouraged him to re-work it in a more user-friendly key. If you like
Sturm und Drang
, you'll love this! It is scored for oboes, bassoons, four horns and strings (with divided violas at various points).
