Christian Geist
I have enjoyed editing Geist's music so much that I have decided to publish a Complete Works series. In conjunction with the world authority, Lars Berglund, I hope to have it completed by 2011, which is the 300th anniversary of Geist's death. I am also very happy that Gyorgy Vashegyi plans to record at least some of it with his fantastic Hungarian ensembles.

The first two pieces were recorded by the soloists of Yale Schola Cantorum as part of their Missa Resurrectionis project. For details of the CD, email us.

GEI003 Alleluja. De funere ad vitam
Edited and typeset by Brian Clark

This Easter motet is scored for solo Alto, violin and continuo and dates from 1672. In setting a text full of imagery of the resurrection and Christ as the bread of life, Geist uses dramatically different textures, matching the voice and the violin in equal virtuosity.
Performing set: Two scores and single instrumental parts.

After a short sinfonia, the angel asks the shepherds what they have seen, the shepherds answer and then the angel leads them in singing of God's glory.

This setting of the Christmas text "And the Word was made flesh" is scored for pairs of sopranos (the second one perhaps a mezzo) and violins with optional viola da gamba and continuo. The autograph parts upon which our Editio princeps is based tell us that Geist wrote it in 1672.
