| | Antonio Caldara | | This year sees the start of a two-year project in which we will provide the music for a series of concerts and hopefully a recording by music by Antonio Caldara, who was without doubt one of the most celebrated composers of his day. The fact that he only rose to become Vice-Kapellmeister at Vienna had more to do with the fact that he was not ideally suited to running a court ensemble; despite the fact that he earned far more than his "superior", Fux, he still managed to leave substantial gambling debts on his death! His music is tuneful, wonderfully rich and sumptuous, and contrapuntally as taut as any 18th-century composer's. Zelenka and J. S. Bach thought highly enough of his music to copy it out for their own use. |
